What happens when Vitamin C is added to an iodine and starch solution?

As you may already know, an iodine and starch solution is an aqueous solution with a dark violet/black color. But when you add vitamin C to the solution, what happens? Can you provide a lengthy explanation for me? Tomorrow, I’m doing an experiment which tests the levels of vitamin C in different substances, but all I need to know for now is what will happen.
Vitamin C. reacts with iodine:
C6H8O6 + I2 ==> C6H6O6 + 2H+ + 2 I-
So you can use titration with iodine to find out the concentration of vitamin C. Since the reaction ratio is 1:1, moles vitamin = moles I2 at the endpoint, so concentrations (M) x volumes are also equal. The reasoning is a bit like in acid-base titrations, which you might have met.
The suspended starch forms a dark blue loosely held complex (almost a solid state solution) with I2, so long as there is any, so it acts as an indicator.

I currently take a multivitamin pill as well as fish oil daily. I don’t want to overdo it.
Which vitamin supplements are most important for a young woman to take?
Look for multivitamins that are marketed to younger women as they will be designed to suit your needs. If you are active, you should make sure you get enough calcium and vitamin D so that you don’t get any stress fractures. This is even more important if you’re rapidly increasing your exercise levels from nothing. It’s too much, too fast, and the bone can’t handle it. As long as you are taking a decent multivitamin then you shouldn’t need any more. Fish oil is also a great supplement to take since it provides an excellent source of good fatty acids that help with overall cardiovascular health and brain function such as memory, recall and focus.

Sunday, February 28th, 2010I cannot take anything with iron because it causes constipation, but I feel I need some type of vitamin. Do other women around this age take vitamins? Any comments or suggestions are welcomed. Thanks!
It really depends on your health. If you are healthy, it cannot hurt to take calcium with vitamin D. It helps to prevent bone loss when you get older. But, due to the constipation from iron, I would just take 1 or 2 calcium tablets a day – which would be about 500 mg. Calcium can cause constipation as well if you take too many. Potassium helps with constipation as does plenty of water and fruit.
